Cemal Azmi

Cemal Azmi (1868-17 April 1922) was the Wali of Trebizond Vilayet under the Ottoman Empire.

Biography[]

Cemal Azmi was born in 1868 in Arapkir, Ottoman Empire, and he was appointed Wali of Trebizond Vilayet in northern Turkey. He was one of the main perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide, and he favored conducting massacres outside of the city of Trabzon, while he drowned thousands of people in the Black Sea. He also turned a hospital into a pleasure dome where Armenian girls were raped, and he sent 10-13 year old Armenian girls to his son and drowned the others. The brutal Azmi was therefore a target of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation during Operation Nemesis, and on 17 April 1922 he was killed alongside Behaeddin Shakir by Aram Yerganian and Arshavir Shirakian.
