Flag of Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British overseas territory in the western Caribbean Sea, comprising the territories of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman, located to the south of Cuba, northeast of Costa Rica, north of Panama, east of Mexico, and northwest of Jamaica. George Town is the capital of the islands. The islands were largely uninhabited until England colonized the islands in 1670, and slaves were imported from Africa after the 1730s. The island was governed as a part of Jamaica until 1962, when Jamaica became a Commonwealth realm; the Cayman Islands became a separate crown colony. In 2011, the islands had a population of 56,732 people.
