Castile was a medieval kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula that existed from 1065 to 1516, when it was united with Leon and Aragon to form the kingdom of Spain. Castile was originally a frontier lordship, and in the 10th century its counts began to have greater levels of autonomy. In 1065, Castile separated from Leon, with Sancho II of Castile being its first ruler. From 1072 to 1157 it was united with Castile under the rule of the House of Ivrea, and in 1230 the union became permanent after another temporary division. The Crown of Castile would rule the two kingdoms until 1516, when King Charles I of Spain united Castile, Leon, and Aragon as the kingdom of Spain.
