Cassiopeia of Aethiopia

Cassiopeia of Aethiopia (died 1342 BC) was the wife of King Cepheus of Aethiopia and the mother of Andromeda.

Biography[]

Cassiopeia was a nymph, and she married King Cepheus of Aethiopia and mothered Andromeda, whom she claimed was more beautiful than all the Nereids, angering Poseidon and causing him to direct the sea monster Cetus to destroy Ethiopia. Cepheus and Cassiopeia learned from the Oracle of Siwa that the only way to save their kingdom would be to sacrifice their daughter, but Perseus rescued her and slew Cetus in 1342 BC. However, Poseidon insisted on punishing Cassiopeia, placing her in the heavens chained to a throne which became a constellation.
