Cary James DiBartolo (born April 13, 1961) is an American mobster in the North Jersey based DiMeo crime family. He is a soldier in the Soprano Crew, going back to the early 1980s. In 2006, he, along with underboss Paulie Gualtieri, took part in a robbery turned shootout on a Colombian gang, stealing $1,100,000 and murdering two members.

Biography[]

Early life and Mafia involvement[]

Born to an Italian-American family in Park Ridge, New Jersey in 1961, Cary DiBartolo dropped out of Park Ridge High School at age 17, and quickly got involved with organized crime. Johnny Boy Soprano, a capo in the DiMeo crime family, caught a liking for DiBartolo, and let him hang out at their club, where he first met future boss and Soprano's son Tony Soprano. In 1993, after many years of working for them, DiBartolo was made, and became a soldier. It is rumored that the unsolved 1994 murder of Jack Custis (who was found dead with bullet wounds in an abandoned warehouse in North Caldwell) was caused by DiBartolo.

Colombian shootout[]

In April 2006, DiMeo acting boss Tony Soprano was shot and left in a coma by his dementia-ridden uncle and official boss Corrado "Junior" Soprano. By that time, underboss Paulie Gualtieri and capo Vito Spatafore were supposed to pay tribute to Soprano's wife Carmela. On a tip from Spatafore, Gualtieri and DiBartolo broke into a facility where drug money could be found. They encountered a superintendent, who instinctively ran away from them. They chased him into a corner, where they ordered him to open a nearby door at gunpoint. When he opened it, two Colombian gang members were waiting for them. One shot the superintendent dead, and was subsequently shot by Gualtieri and DiBartolo, after which another one appeared from the corner with a knife and wrestled Gualtieri. DiBartolo tried to get a good shot at him, but couldn't since he risked Gualtieri's life as well. However, the Colombian then kicked Gualtieri in the groin, knocking him to the gorund, which gave DiBartolo an opportunity. He shot him in the shoulder and then in the chest. When he collapsed, Gualtieri finished the job by stabbing him with his knife. They found $1,100,000 in a freezer and ran away.
