Carter Littlepage Stevenson, Jr. (21 September 1817 – 15 August 1888) was a Major General of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Biography[]
Stevenson was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and graduated West Point in 1838 and was breveted a Second Lieutenant in the 5th Infantry Regiment and assigned to command in Wisconsin. In 1840 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida against the Seminoles and he later served on frontier duties during the Mexican-American War. After the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Resaca de la Palma in May 1846, he returned to posts in Mississippi, the Indian Territory, and Texas. Stevenson helped to protect the Pacific Railroads from the Apache tribes and fought in the Third Seminole War and Mormon War in the late 1850s.
When his home state of Virginia seceded shortly before the American Civil War, Stevenson returned back to his lands and became a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate States Army. He saw little fighting before the Cumberland Gap Campaigns in 1862, where he served under Edmund Kirby Smith in the Battle of Perryville. He was captured after fighting in the Battle of Champion Hill and other conflicts during the Vicksburg Campaign but received a parole and was released. He reported to the army in Chattanooga and fought in the Battle of Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, and then the Franklin-Nashville Campaign, and he surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston in April 1865.
After the war he worked as a civil and mining engineer and died in Caroline County, Virginia, at the age of 70.
