Carroll Ashmore Campbell Jr. (24 July 1940-7 December 2005) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-SC 4) from 3 January 1979 to 3 January 1987 (succeeding James Mann and preceding Liz J. Patterson) and Governor of South Carolina from 14 January 1987 to 11 January 1995 (succeeding Richard Riley and preceding David Beasley).
Biography[]
Carroll Ashmore Campbell Jr. was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1940, and he grew up in Liberty and Simpsonville. He opposed the racial integration of his hometown's public schools in 1970, and he served in the State House from 1970 to 1974, in the State Senate from 1977 to 1978, in the US House of Representatives from 1979 to 1987, and as Governor from 1987 to 1995. Campbell attracted BMW to build its first factory in America in his state. In 1996, he was considered as a possible running mate for Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole, but he was passed over in favor of Jack Kemp. He died in 2005, and his son David H. Wilkins served as Ambassador to Canada.
