Caroline Buckingham

Caroline Buckingham (1987-2020) was a British journalist and DedSec operative who lived in London during the 2020s. She was instrumental in recruiting new allies to DedSec and liberating Camden Town, but she was ultimately killed in a shootout on the Nine Elms Walkway amid the 2020 London unrest.

Biography[]

Caroline Buckingham was born in Leamington Spa, England in 1987 to an English father and Chinese mother, and she once wrote for the magazine "Guns Guns Guns!". She campaigned unsuccessfully to establish Brixton Barrier Block Estate a CCTV-free zone, failed every GCSE, asked the Bagley AI system how to make friends, and identified as a pagan. She looked favorably on DedSec for rescuing people from Clan Kelley.

In 2020, she spoke with DedSec operative Jack Hermosilla after she and 300 other skilled tech workers were fired from their job at the Civil Aviation Traffic Office, and she persuaded Hermosilla to investigate her replacement. After breaking into the CATO, Hermosilla discovered that her company planned to replace her and the other workers with an AI, which he destroyed at the Barbican Centre. He then told Buckingham about the company's plans and about his success in destroying the AI, and Buckingham agreed to join DedSec in gratitude. She went on to meet Muireann Slattery (as well as bumping into the late DedSec operative Dalton Wolfe's widow Janet Wolfe), and Slattery agreed to join DedSec if Buckingham would retrieve evidence that her job handing chemicals had given her migraines. Buckingham hacked a boat on the River Thames and discovered that a government official had procured the biohazard waste from Clan Kelley on the black market; she then went to Nine Elms' docks to destroy the biohazard waste. The 2020 Nine Elms break-in resulted in a massive shootout between Buckingham and the guards, but she ultimately succeeded in destroying the waste and recruiting Slattery.

Later, acting on intel from Veronica O'Leary and Amal Reddy, she set out to hit Albion's main base in Camden Town, King's Cross Station. She used drones to hack into the system and cause a power surge, eliminating Albion's base and leading to Camden rising up against Albion; Camden was the first district to be freed of Albion's rule. She then met with Reddy, and he told her that, now that Camden was free, more people would be willing to join DedSec. Charlie Robinson joined DedSec shortly after.

One night, Buckingham decided to travel to Lambeth from Westminster, driving over the Nine Elms Walkway in search of a thrill. However, her car veered over the side of the under-construction bridge and onto a side ramp, where she was discovered by Albion guards. She took down Brandon Desai and another Albion guard before the Albion NCO Alfred Evans threw a grenade next to her, critically injuring her. With another Albion guard approaching from behind, Buckingham attempted to find new cover, but Evans gunned her down, killing her. Her death was a severe blow to DedSec's morale, as she was one of its original members following Veronica O'Leary's reactivation of the group.
