Carole King Klein (9 February 1942-), born Carol Joan Klein, was an American singer-songwriter who famously wrote or co-wrote 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the most successful female songwriter of the latter half of the 20th century in the USA. Born in Manhattan, New York City, New York in 1942 to Jewish parents, she began to learn music when she was four, and, in the 1960s, she and her first husband Gerry Goffin wrote more than two dozen chart hits, most of which became standards for numerous artists. Her 1971 album Tapestry topped the US albums chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the chart for six years, and she made 25 solo albums throughout her career. In addition to being a decorated singer-songwriter, King was also a vocal supporter of the Democratic Party, campaigning for John Kerry during his 2003 presidential bid and singing at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, and also campaigning for Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey in 2013 and 2020.
