The Carnutes were a powerful Gallic tribe which lived between the Sequana (Seine) and Liger (Loire) Rivers in the heart of Gaul (now France). Cenabum (Orleans) served as their capital, and the Carnutes minted their own coins. In 57 BC, the Roman general Julius Caesar imposed a protectorate over the Carnutes during the Gallic Wars, but the Carnutes assassinated their puppet king. In 53 BC, the Carnutes took part in Vercingetorix' uprising against Caesar, but they were forced to submit. They became foederati during the Roman Empire, and they were never Romanized.
