Carnaby Street is a pedestrianized shopping street in Soho, London, England. Close to Oxford Street and Regent Street, it was named for Karnaby House, which was built in 1683. During the 1820s, a market developed on Carnaby Street, and it became infamous for an 1854 cholera outbreak which originated from a polluted water pump. During the 1960s, Carnaby Street became popular for mods and hippies, and many independent fashion boutiques opened along the street. In October 1973, the street was pedestrianized from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and it became a popular tourist destination.
