Carmine Rosato's family was a rogue faction of the Corleone crime family that was founded by Carmine Rosato. Following the death of Peter Clemenza and the refusal of his successor Frank Pentangeli to give Carmine and his brother Tony Rosato three territories in The Bronx promised to them by Clemenza, the Rosato brothers formed their own families, and Carmine took over New York City. In the two weeks following the death of Aldo Trapani in January 1959, Carmine Rosato took over several key New York rackets, including drugs and prostitution. Carmine later called Dominic Corleone, his rival, to have a sit down and discuss their problems, as Corleone had begun to chip away at his rackets. However, the meeting was an ambush, and Rosato failed to kill both Pentangeli and Corleone, although he left Pentangeli with the false impression that Corleone had ordered the hit. A furious Corleone retaliated by taking over the rest of Rosato's rackets and killing several of his made men, and he proceeded to kill Rosato and blow up his compound in his final act to destroy the family.
