Carmarthenshire is a unitary authority in the southwest of Wales, with Carmarthen serving as its capital. Its other large towns are Llanelli and Ammanford. The region was part of Deheubarth during the Middle Ages, and it was invaded by the Normans in the 12th and 13th centuries before it was subjugated by King Edward I of Wales. There was further unrest during Owain Glyndwr's revolt in the early 15th century and during the English Civil War in the 17th century. Today, it is one of the worst-performing regions in the United Kingdom due to the decline of industry and its lack of tourism, and it instead focuses on agriculture.
