Carlos Mario Alzate

Carlos Mario "El Arete" Alzate Urquijo (26 September 1961-) was a Colombian sicario and a leader of the cartel's military wing.

Biography[]

Carlos Mario Alzate was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1961, the son-in-law of Roberto Escobar. He joined Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel under the command of Jhon Jairo Arias and befriended Dandenys Munoz Mosquera, Jhon Jairo Velasquez, Brances Alexander Muñoz, Juan Carlos Aguilar Gallego, and Victor Granada. The hitmen were involved in hundreds of targeted killings, especially against the Colombian National Police. "El Arete" ("the Earring"), as Alzate became known, led his own subgroup of sicarios in Medellin's Buenos Aires neighborhood and was involved in more than 300 murders. On 17 February 1993, he surrendered to Colombian authorities in Medellin and was released on 27 November 2001. He was shot twice by sicarios while leaving hsi detention center, forcing the authorities to give him a new identity in Barcelona, Spain.
