Carlos Julio Arosemena Monroy

Carlos Julio Arosemena Monroy (24 August 1919-5 March 2004) was President of Ecuador from 7 November 1961 to 11 July 1963, succeeding Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra and preceding Ramon Castro Jijon.

Biography[]

Carlos Julio Arosemena Monroy was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1919, the son of Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola and the cousin of Otto Arosemena Gomez. He practiced law before serving as President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1952 and as Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra's Vice President from 1960 to 1961. After Velasco's overthrow, he served as President from 1961 to 1963, and he modernized the country's telecommunications, created the national aviation company, and supported Fidel Castro's revolution in Cuba. He was overthrown in a US-backed coup in 1963.
