Carlos Fonseca

Carlos Fonseca Amador (23 June 1936-8 November 1976) was the founder of the Sandinistas, a communist revolutionary group in Nicaragua.

Biography[]

Carlos Fonseca Amador was born on 23 June 1936 in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, and he was involved in political groups since secondary school. In 1957 he traveled to the Soviet Union as a Socialist Party of Nicaragua delegate, writing a book called "A Nicaraguan in Moscow" about his experience in Moscow. He studied Augusto Cesar Sandino and founded the Sandinistas, a communist/socialist revolutionary movement that began the Nicaraguan Revolution against Luis Somoza Debayle in 1963. Supported by the KGB, Fonseca waged a guerrilla war against the United States-supported Nicaraguan government. He was killed by the Nicaraguan Army at Zinica on 8 November 1976.
