Carloman of Middle Francia (28 June 751-4 December 771) was the King of Middle Francia from 768 to 771, succeeding Pepin the Short and preceding Charlemagne.
Biography[]
Carloman was born on 28 June 751 to Pepin the Short, and he was a member of the Frankish Catholic House of Karling. Carloman and his brother Charlemagne each inherited a half of Francia on the death of their father, with Carloman ruling Middle France (central and southern France, Switzerland, and southwestern Germany). He was rivals with his younger brother Charlemagne after their father's death, but his mother Bertrada favored Charlemagne and helped him in gaining several allies, stopping Carloman from going to war. He died three years later in 771, and Charlemagne inherited his kingdom.
