Carlo Gervasi was an elderly made man in the DiMeo crime family who served in Jimmy Altieri's crew during the 1990s. In 1999, after Altieri was executed for being a rat, Gervasi became the new captain of the Altieri crew. Gervasi smuggled grey-market goods into the United States from container ships docking at the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, importing anything from Vespa scooters to provolone cheese. Gervasi was a quiet and secretive person, having two sons and a wife. In 2006, he took over Vito Spatafore's construction business and the ports of New Jersey after Spatafore was executed by Phil Leotardo for his homosexuality, and Gervasi and Silvio Dante killed Spatafore's killer Dominic Gamiello for insulting both the New Jersey family and Gervasi as homosexuals.
Gervasi's son attended Rutgers University and became involved with loansharking there, later being arrested for drug dealing. In 2007, his cousin Burt Gervasi defected to the Lupertazzi crime family during the war between DiMeo boss Tony Soprano and Lupertazzi boss Leotardo, leading to his execution. These two factors influenced Gervasi's decision to turn states, and he testified against Soprano to keep his son out of jail.
