Carl Gustav Armfelt

Carl Gustav Armfelt (9 November 1668-24 October 1736) was a general of Sweden who fought in the War of the Grand Alliance and the Great Northern War.

Biography[]

Armfelt was born in Swedish Ingria in St. Petersburg, and he joined Ferdinand of Furstenburg's regiment during the War of the Grand Alliance in 1685, serving in France for twelve years. In the aftermath of this service, he became a General of the Swedish Army, and commanded the army near Stockholm during the Great Northern War. In July 1700 he aided King Charles XII of Sweden in the expedition that captured Copenhagen from Denmark. Armfelt was later named commander of the Finnish Army in 1713, fighting Russia in the Battle of Storkyro in 1714. Again, he served under King Charles XII in the Siege of Fredriksten, but when the king died, he led his men home through the cold, losing several troops in what was called the "Carolean Death March" in 1718. In 1731, after the war, he was ennobled, and he died in Nyland.
