Carinthia, known as Kaernten in German, is the southernmost state of Austria. The region is located in the eastern Alps, and it is full of mountains and lakes. Carinthia was contested between Austria and Slovenia after World War I, and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia fought a brief border war against Austria for control of the region. The region was retained by Austria after the end of the war, and Slovenes are still a minority in the region. In 2015, Carinthia had a population of 557,371 people.
