The Caribbean Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean, bounded by Mexico and Central America to the west, to the north by Cuba, to the east by the Lesser Antilles, and to the south by South America. The sea, along with the Gulf of Mexico and the northern Atlantic, help to form the Caribbean region. The sea is known for its tropical islands and its beautiful, clear water, and it has many gulfs and bays. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Caribbean was famous for being home to much pirate activity during the Golden Age of Piracy, and many of its islands are still home to colonial-era forts and buildings, especially the forts in Havana, Cuba and Nassau, Bahamas.
