Belcalis Almanzar was born in New York City, New York in 1992, and she was raised in the Highbridge neighborhood of South Bronx, The Bronx. The daughter of a Dominican father and a Trinidadian father, she spent much time at her paternal grandfather's home in Washington Heights, and she became a member of the Bloods at the age of 16. She worked at a supermarket before turning to stripping at age 19, and she became an Instagram sensation in 2013. In November 2015, she made her musical debut on Jamaican reggae fusion singer Shaggy's remix to his single "Boom Boom". In August 2017, her song "Bodak Yellow" entered the top two of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it reached number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Her 2018 debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. She also became a vocal critic of Donald Trump's presidential administration, and she defended her scandalous image. Cardi B later became a high-profile supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and his democratic socialist movement.
