The Capture of the Hengelo occurred on 12 December 1640 when the pirate ship Magdalena, captained by Ossian Trewhella, attacked the Dutch fluyt Hengelo off the west coast of Antigua. Having failed to capture the profitable smuggler Stier, Trewhella aimed to seize another prize from the Dutch to appease his men, so he attacked the Barbados-bound Hengelo while it was 3 weeks out of Sint Eustatius. The pirates immobilized the Hengelo with a cannonade before boarding the ship, and Trewhella killed the Dutch captain Govert Zwolsman in a swordfight. The pirates captured 280 gold pieces, 26 tons of food, 39 tons of sugar, and 1 cannon from the Hengelo, and the pirates sailed to Antigua to sell their newly-acquired goods.
