The Capture of the Carrere occurred on 13 June 1640 when the English pirate Ossian Trewhella and his flagship, the Magdalena, intercepted and captured the French Navy sloop Carrere off Nevis. Having been issued letters of marque from the Governor of Nevis to target French shipping from Montserrat, Trewhella attacked the raider Carrere while it was 4 days out of Montserrat (bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico). His ship immobilized the Carrere with its superior firepower before boarding the vessel; Trewhella killed the French captain Clement Cordonnier in a duel and recruited 20 captured French crewmen, plus the ship's quartermaster Patrice Barreau.
