Captain Edwin (836-875) was a West Saxon captain who commanded the garrison of Canterbury Barracks during the late 9th century AD. Edwin was a closeted gay man, writing a letter to "the venerable Captain of Dover" Harold in 875 AD to ask him for reinforcements to guard the city's treasury (as he was guarding it by himself). He then wrote, "If you care anything for me, and your beautiful letters and poems led me to believe you do, send us men." Edwin addressed the letter, "The Captain of your heart, Edwin." Not long after, Edwin was killed by the Viking Eivor, who infiltrated the treasury, killed Edwin, and looted the treasures stored in the room.
