Cape May is a city at the southern tip of the Cape May Peninsula in Cape May County, New Jersey. Cape May was explored and chartered from 1611 to 1614 by Dutch captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, for whom the area is named, and it was later settled by New Englanders from New Haven, Connecticut. It was formed as the borough of Cape Island on 8 March 1848, but it was renamed to Cape May City on 9 March 1869. Cape May, which had hosted vacationers from Philadelphia since the mid-18th century, is the United States' oldest seaside resort. By the 19th century, it was considered one of the finest resorts in America, and the entire city became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. In 2016, Cape May had a population of 3,500; every summer, the population is expanded by as many as 50,000 visitors.
