Biography[]
Cao Wanyi was born on 14 September 940, the daughter of Cao Yuande and the sister of Cao Yijin. She came from one of the most powerful families in the kingdom, and she was betrothed to marry Prince Liang Jing at a young age.
However, her family siided with his brother Liang Yan in the civil war of 943-947, and Liang Jing punished her family by having her brother Cao Yi castrated at the age of 7 and having her uncle Cao Yuanzhong and aunt Temulun executed.
Cao Wanyi was nevertheless formally betrothed to Liang Jing until 957, when he broke the betrothal upon coming of age, having discovered that Cao Wanyi was deformed and a lesbian. This further damaged relations with the Cao family and prevented them from gaining more influence at the court.
