The Canton of Zurich is a canton of northeastern Switzerland, located on the border with southern Germany. Zurich's guilds revolted against the Holy Roman Empire in 1336 and joined Switzerland in 1351, adding some territories in the south to the canton in 1362. During the 19th century, Zurich's conservative leadership experienced its downfall, with liberals taking over the government and abolishing the death penalty and instituting a popular vote in April 1869. In January 2006, a new constitution was ratified. Zurich had a population of 1,463,459 people in 2015.
