Cantal

Cantal is a department in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of southern central France, with Aurillac serving as its capital. Named for the Mounts of Cantal, the department was among the 83 original departments created in 1790 during the French Revolution. Cantal is a staunchly Catholic and conservative department, serving as the political base of Georges Pompidou, but the area around Aurillac was historically anti-clerical and radical. In 2019, Cantal had a population of 144,692 people.
