The Camorra is an organized crime syndicate from Naples and other parts of southern Italy, first appearing in 1417 as a secret society during Spain's rule over Naples. In 1753, the term "Camorra" was coined, a combination of the Italian word capo ("boss") and morra (referring to a common form of gambling). The Camorra grew powerful in both Italy and in America, but Pellegrino Morano's Brooklyn Camorra was wiped out by the Morello crime family during the 1910s. The Chicago Outfit's leadership would consist mostly of Neapolitans during the 1920s and 1930s, making it another Neapolitan family, albeit with the family structure of the American Mafia. Today, the Camorra still exists in Naples, and it is involved in human trafficking in addition to other illicit activities.
