Camberwell is a district of South London in the London Borough of Southwark, located 2.75 miles southeast of Charing Cross. The area was known to the Anglo-Saxons as Cambrewelle, meaning "Well of the Britons", and it was already a substantial settlement by the time of the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Camberwell's population increased from 7,059 people in 1801 to 54,667 by 1851, and the Metropolitan Police Service expanded into Camberwell in 1829. In 1889, Camberwell was merged into Greater London from Surrey, and it became an industrial district. By the 21st century, Camberwell had a high violent crime rate and an above average property crime rate for London.
