The Cali soccer field massacre occurred in late 1991 when drug lord Pablo Escobar of the Medellin Cartel sent in his sicarios to massacre the members of the Cali Cartel as they played soccer in the city of Cali, Colombia. The cartel members were all dressed the same, so Cali Cartel boss Helmer Herrera was able to survive the massacre, shooting at the Medellin members as he ran away. The attack left 14 Cali Cartel members dead, igniting a war between Medellin and Cali.
