Flag of Caithness

Caithness is a historic county of northern Scotland, with Wick serving as its capital. It means "headland of the Catt people" in Norse, named for a Pictish tribe. Norsemen from Orkneyar arrived in Caithness during the 9th century, mixing with the Pictish and Gaelic natives after establishing themselves around the coast. Following the Scottish-Norwegian War's end in 1266, Caithness was among the Norwegian lands ceded to Scotland, and it became an earldom in 1334 and was a British Parliamentary constituency from 1708 to 1918. In 2011, Caithness had a population of 26,486.
