Caeso Volaginius Trifer (74 BC-) was a Roman Army legionary who served in Marcus Licinius Crassus' Eastern legions during the mid-1st century BC. He was among the Roman prisoners taken by the Parthians at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC, and he and his comrades from this "lost legion" were resettled in Central Asia to serve as frontier troops for the Parthian empire. These Romans eventually escaped from Parthian captivity and made their way into China, where they served alongside the Xiongnu as mercenaries and fought against the Han Chinese at the Battle of Zhizhi in 36 BC. Most of the Romans were taken captive after the Xiongnu's defeat, and the Han general Chen Tang gave them land in Gansu to be settled; they named the town "Liqian", a Chinese transliteration of the word "legion".
