The Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was a republic of the Soviet Union that existed from 1918 to 1991, with its capital at Minsk. Byelorussia was one of the westernmost republics of the USSR, and it saw much of the heavy fighting of the Polish-Soviet War from 1918-1921 and of World War II from 1941 to 1944. On 27 July 1990, the Byelorussian SSR declared its state sovereignty, and it declared independence on 25 August 1991. On 28 November 1996, the Supreme Soviet government was disbanded and replaced by the new nation of Belarus.
