The Republic of Buryatia is a federal subject of the Russian Federation, with Ulan-Ude serving as its capital. The republic was established on 30 May 1923 as the Buryat ASSR, and it declared sovereignty in 1990 before becoming the "Republic of Buryatia" in 1992. In 2010, Buryatia had a population of 972,021 people.
