The Buryat Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR that existed from 1923 to 1990, with Ulan-Ude serving as its capital. The republic was originally known as the "Buryat-Mongol ASSR", but the "Mongol" name was removed in 1958. In 1990, the Buryat ASSR declared its sovereignty and adopted the name "Republic of Buryatia" in 1992, becoming an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation.
