
Clarence Burgess Owens (2 August 1951-) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-UT 4) from 3 January 2021, succeeding Ben McAdams.
Biography[]
Clarence Burgess Owens was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1951, and he played football for the New York Jets from 1973 to 1979 and for the Oakland Raiders from 1980 to 1982. Owens, a devout Mormon and conservative, later entered politics as a Republican. In June 2019, he testified at a US House of Representatives hearing on a reparations bill and came out in opposition to reparations for slavery; in November, he called Donald Trump "an advocate for black Americans." In November 2019, he sought election to the US Congress from UT-4, winning the 30 June 2020 Republican primary to face incumbent Democrat Ben McAdams in the general election in November 2020. He went on to unseat McAdams amid a red wave in the US House of Representatives.
