Burgenland is the easternmost and least populous state of Austria, with Eisenstadt serving as its capital. Burgenland borders Styria to the southwest and Lower Austria to the northwest, while it borders Hungary to the east, Slovakia to the northeast, and Slovenia to the southeast. The state assembly, the Landtag, has 36 seats, governed by a coalition between the Social Democratic Party of Austria and the Freedom Party of Austria in 2015. The region has notable populations of Croats (45,000) and Hungarians (15,000), with the Croats being descended from refugees created by the Ottoman Empire in 1532 and the Hungarians being descendants of border guards. In 2017, Burgenland had a population of 284,900 people.
