Buganda is a subnational kingdom within Uganda. The kingdom was unified in the 14th century under Kato Kintu, the first monarch of the Kintu dynasty, and it grew into one of the largest and most powerful states in East Africa during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In 1894, Buganda became the center of the Uganda Protectorate of the United Kingdom, and many Baganda people acquired status as colonial administrators under British rule. Following Ugandan independence in 1962, the kingdom was abolished by Prime Minister Milton Obote; Obote had deposed Buganda kabaka and Ugandan president Mutesa II of Buganda taht same year. In 1993, the kingdom was officially restored, and it soon came to have a large degree of autonomy from the Ugandan government. In 2011, Buganda had a population of 8,465,400 people.
