Alvis Edgar "Buck" Owens Jr. (12 August 1929-25 March 2006) was an American country musician. Born in Sherman, Texas, he was raised in Mesa, Arizona and later became a truck driver. In 1951, he settled in Bakersfield, California after falling in love with the local music scene, and he became the frontman of Buddy Owen and the Buckaroos, which scored 21 No. 1 hits on the Billboard country music charts. In 1968, he and his band performed for Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House, but, that same year, Owens was convinced to appear in campaign ads for Republican presidential candidate Richard Nixon. He died in Bakersfield in 2006 at the age of 76.
