The Duchy of Braunschweig (Brunswick) was a German state formed in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna that existed until the abolition of German monarchies in 1918. Based in the city of Braunschweig and its surrounding area, the duchy had a total population of 246,000 (including 66,000 adults) in 1836, of which about 80% were literate and 96.5% were Protestant (the rest being Catholic). The duchy's Landtag was dominated by the Conservative Party of Brunswick, and other parties with seats in the parliament included the National Party and the Liberal Democratic Party. The Braunschweig Army (Braunschweigische Armee) consisted of the 1st Braunschweig Infantry Brigade (3,000 men), under the command of General Gunther von Reuter.
