Bruce Edward Babbitt (27 June 1938-) was the Democratic Governor of Arizona from 4 March 1978 to 5 January 1987 (succeeding Wesley Bolin and preceding Evan Mecham) and the United States Secretary of the Interior from 22 January 1993 to 12 January 2001 (succeeding Manuel Lujan Jr. and preceding Gale Norton).

Biography

Bruce Edward Babbitt was born in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1938 to a prominent Catholic family, and he worked as a lawyer before serving as Attorney General of Arizona from 1975 to 1978 and then as Governor from 1978 to 1987, finishing Wesley Bolin's term after his death in office, and being re-elected twice. He focused on tax reform, health care, and water management as Governor, and he briefly sought the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States in 1988. A cofounder of the "New Democrat" Democratic Leadership Council, he served as President Bill Clinton's Secretary of the Interior from 1993 to 2001, after which he worked as an attorney.
