Brother Quiescis

Brother Quiescis was an Anglo-Saxon Roman Catholic monk who lived in Canterbury, Kent during the late 9th century AD. Quiescis took a vow of silence, forcing his brother, Acolyte Alwin, to translate his gesticulations into verbal statements. In 875, he and Alwin came across the Viking warrior Eivor in Canterbury, and, through Alwin's translation, Quiescis challenged Eivor to flyting. Alwin delivered Quiescis' verses, but Eivor defeated Quiescis, leading to Alwin - claiming to be an impartial observer - giving Eivor his prize silver and translating Quiescis' rhyming plea for Eivor to go away now that he had won the day.
