Brother Hortbert was a West Saxon Roman Catholic priest who lived at St. Hadrian's Priory in Kent during the late 9th century AD. In 875 AD, he had a debate with Basim ibn Ishaq about faith, reason, and predestination; when Basim asked if God had predestined Judas to betray Jesus, Hortbert brought up that some believed that Judas was used by God to fulfill the prophecy, only for Brother Cedric to interrupt the debate by accusing Horbert of promoting heresy by claiming Judas' "innocence" and suggesting that the Roman Catholic Church's teachings could be questioned. Cedric then ordered that Hortbert be expelled from the priory.
