The British Indian Army was the army of the British Raj from 1895 to 1947, consisting of troops from across the Indian Subcontinent. The army was established in 1895 to supplement the presidency armies of India, and the Indian army absorbed the presidency armies in 1903. British Indian troops fought in World War I (especially in the Middle East) with the promise of self-determination, but their hopes were let down when the British betrayed their promise. However, the Indians did gain independence after fighting in World War II, and the British Indian Army was disbanded on Indian independence in 1947.
