British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rockies. The British established the settlement of Victoria in 1843, and Victoria became the provincial capital. In 1866, Vancouver Island was incorporated into British Columbia, and it became the sixth province of Canada in 1871. Vancouver, incorporated in 1886, grew to become the largest city in the province, and British Columbia became known for its beautiful climate. In 2016, British Columbia had a population of 4,648,055 people.
