The British Army German Station was a military unit of the British Army that was stationed in West Germany from 1946 to 1949 and remained in Germany until 1991.
History[]
Following the end of World War II, 6,000 British Army soldiers were stationed in Gottingen, West Germany to help with the occupation of West Germany. Although they were considerably smaller than the 30,000-strong US Army German Station to the north in Brunswick, the British Army German Station also helped in the defense of West Germany. They were posted on the border on the occasion that the Red Army of the Soviet Union or the East Germany armed forces invaded the west. British occupation forces made up a third of the Western Allied forces occupying West Berlin, along with the American army and the French Army.
The British armed forces in Germany remained in military bases until 1991, when the Cold War ended. Following the reunification of Germany, they had no purpose in remaining in their bases, so they were repatriated back to England. However, the US Army German Station maintained several bases in Germany, using them as bases if any European war was to take place in which American forces would fight.
