Britannia Inferior was a province of the Roman Empire which existed from 197 AD to 296 AD, when it was replaced by the Diocese of Britain. The new province was carved out of Roman Britain during the reforms of Septimius Severus, and it included much of northern England and Wales, with Eburacum (York) serving as its capital. A praetorian legate commanded a legion stationed in the city, and the subdivision existed until Diocletian's reorganization of the empire in 296 AD.
