Brigitte Bierlein

Brigitte Bierlein (25 June 1949-3 June 2024) was Chancellor of Austria from 3 June 2019 to 7 January 2020, succeeding Hartwig Loeger and preceding Sebastian Kurz.

Biography[]

Brigitte Bierlein was born in Vienna, Austria on 25 June 1949, and she became a lawyer in 1971 and a judge in 1975. Known for her conservative views on social policy and her hardline law-and-order stances, she had close ties to both the OVP and the FPO, but she nominally remained an independent, and she gained a reputation for working well with opposition parties. From 2018 to 2019, she served as President of the Constitutional Court, and President Alexander Van der Bellen appointed her to serve as Chancellor of Austria in June 2019 following Sebastian Kurz's resignation due to a vote of no-confidence. She served until Kurz was re-elected to power in the September 2019 general election, leaving office in January 2020.
